Description of Work • THIS IS A RE-POST..........PREVIOUS APPLICANTS WILL NEED TO REAPPLY TO BE CONSIDERED* Salary Grade: GN09 Salary Range: $36,677 - $62,092 This position is located at Foothills Correctional Institution in Burke County, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May refer inmates to restrictive housing for temporary assignment. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Applicant must have passed the Sergeant's Promotional Examination within the past five (5) years. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Listed below are the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with this position. These KSAs, along with the minimum education and experience listed, are required in order to be deemed 'eligible' for the position.
