This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Southwest Region in Towaoc, Colorado. • *Division of Forestry and Wildland Fire Management, Helitack. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received. • This position is subject to pre-employment and annual medical screening and physical fitness testing for arduous duty. ### Qualifications • *EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:**(OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for Forestry Technician Series, GS-0462; and Interagency Fire Program Management Qualifications Standards and Guide). • *GS-04:** 6 months of general work experience AND 6 months of specialized work experience. -OR- Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR- 4 seasons of experience qualify for GS-4. • *GS-05:**1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to at least GS-4 -OR - Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. • *GENERAL EXPERIENCE:**(1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. • *SEASONAL EXPERIENCE:** A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Examples of qualifying specialized experience: • Forestry aide or technician work • Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on nonforest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. • Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. • Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work. • *SELECTIVE FACTOR:** The applicant must have possessed all of the following Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations (Redbook), and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position. • *Mandatory selective factors for Exclusive Use Fire Helicopter positions are as follow: Primary Core Requirements:** • Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) • Helicopter Crewmember (HECM) • *Additional Required Training:** • S-290, Intermediate Fire Behavior • *Selectees for IFPM positions will be required to obtain and maintain currency for the NWCG qualification listed above.**This position is one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a **Senior Firefighter (SFF),** and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Detailed information regarding IFPM positions can be found at http://www.ifpm.nifc.gov/. • *FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE AND MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE LIMIT:** This position is covered as a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS) subject to maximum entry age and mandatory retirement at age 57, or any time after 57, upon reaching 20 years of covered service. Applicants for this position must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. An exception is allowed if there is prior federal service in a covered firefighter position.
