Brief Details Job: Biological Science Technician Full-time, Part-time, Temporary Company: Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service Location: Charlestown, RI Job Description This Biological Science Technician position is part of the R5-Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex located in Charlestown, Rhode Island. This is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 6 months. This position may be extended for an additional 1 year and 6 months without further advertisement. This position may be terminated at any time due to lack of work, funding, or as the needs of the Service dictate. Responsibilities As a Biological Science Technician, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Conducting various wildlife and avian censuses; making brood counts of birds; making observations of song birds, predators and other forms of wildlife; assisting with banding of song birds and other wildlife species; conducting nest checks and surveys, conducting vegetation evaluations; and assisting in the operation of bird banding stations, including mist nets. May be responsible for providing work direction for volunteers, interns, YCC enrollees, temporary employees, etc. Assisting with habitat restorations including landowner contacts, GIS mapping, surveying, staking, construction monitoring, seeding, etc. Assisting in preparation of management plans for restored areas. Assisting with performing biological studies for determining the manner and extent to which wildlife populations are affected by management activities. Recording data and compiling information. Assisting with the invasive plant control program by GPS mapping areas and applying herbicides with hand-operated equipment. May be required to operate passenger vehicles, light trucks, ATVs or tractors, load and unload materials and equipment, clean grounds, collect and dispose of refuse, and perform a variety of light maintenance and housekeeping tasks involving the use of hand and power tools and equipment. I possess one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 level or higher in the Federal service, performing the following duties: conducting wildlife and/or avian surveys; capturing, handling, and tagging a variety of wildlife; assisting with wildlife and vegetation studies using geographic information systems (GIS); conducting invasive plant control duties; recording scientific data using global positioning systems (GPS) to prepare reports; leading other biological technicians or volunteers. C. I possess a combination of experience and education as described above which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. (Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours may be used in this calculation). To calculate your percentage of education, first determine the total number of semester hours that exceed 60 semester hours (or your school’s definition of one year of study), then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 60 (or your school’s definition of one year of study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%.
