The City of Portland is currently seeking a welder to join the Office of Management and Finance, Fleet Services. Job duties include but are not limited to: • Fabricates equipment, tools, structures, pipe, and other metal products • Forges and solders metal using the full array of welding techniques including oxygen/acetylene, flux core, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, shielded metal arc, and plasma arc • Repairs defective or damaged metal parts • Operates various metal shop equipment and develop designs • Lays out, assembles, fits, cuts, and welds various metals as required by fabrication • Modifies and/or maintains equipment, fixtures, pipe, fittings, and metal structures requiring close tolerances. The following minimum qualifications are required for this position: • Knowledge of tools, materials, processes, and techniques of welding for various types of metals • Ability to perform layout and sketch designs for metal structures • Ability and experience in welding and fabricating • Ability and experience performing measurements and arithmetic computations, including multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and/or conversions. • Ability and experience ordering and purchasing materials • Ability to review and interpret plans and specificationsThe recruitment process will consist of a pass / fail evaluation of each applicant's training and experience, as demonstrated in their work history and responses to the attached supplemental questions. Those passing the application review process will be invited to a work skills demonstration and written exam, weighted 100%. Only candidates who pass both the application review and work skills demonstration will be placed on an equally ranked eligible list. Do not attach materials not requested.
