The position serves as the Fire Ecologist and is responsible for providing professional expertise in the management and use of fire and fuels management to sustain healthy and functioning ecosystems. The incumbent is also responsible for serving as a Team Lead for staff such as Fuels Specialists and Fuels Technicians. This requires the ability ID collect, analyze and interpret a variety of resource and fire related data, both lead and participate in interdisciplinary fuels management efforts, and coordinate commtr1icate and cooperate with a wide variety of internal and external interests. inherent to this position is a working knowledge and experience in fire ecology, fuels management, fire behavior, fire effects, and fire rehabilitation techniques: fuels, air quality and smoke management; fire preparedness and suppression techniques and tactics: vegetation manipulation and monitoring. The incumbent is a member of the Fire Management staff and is under the supervision of the Fire Management Office, or as delegated by the Fire Management Officer. Physical Demands: The work is normally sedentary. During the fire season, physical exertion is required in the form of long periods of standing; walking over rough uneven or rocky surfaces and exposure to extreme heat, smoke, and high temperatures. Work Environment: Work is normally sedentary, work is often performed in the field. During the fire season, field work may involve high risk exposure to potentially dangerous situations or stress. At times, personal protective equipment will be required. Work may require frequent flying in small aircraft and the use of four Wheel drive vehicles and ATVs. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days. Two Distinct Types Of Wildland Fire Have Been Defined And Include Wildfire And Prescribed Fire Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Wildfire - An unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires. Prescribed Fire – Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
