This student staff position is 20 hours/week and starts at $10.50/hour. Duties:
Job Posting Summary: The Northern Light is a University of Alaska Anchorage student multimedia news publication, funded by both student media fees and advertising revenue. A digital-first source, The Northern Light updates with timely web and multimedia content. The Northern Light is distributed on Tuesdays during the academic year and summer. The multimedia editor is responsible for multimedia content for The Northern Light online. The multimedia editor ideally supervises one or two photographers; combines stories, graphics, photos and other elements to develop multimedia packages, including videos, podcasts and KRUA radio stories; films and records audio for stories on human interest, news, sports, features, arts and entertainment both on campus and in the community; produces multimedia that ranges from unedited video clips to highly produced multimedia projects; works closely with the managing and layout editors to develop and execute The Northern Light's multimedia strategy; works with section editors, reporters and other employees to develop ideas for multimedia content, and; attends weekly staff meetings. This position reports with occasional direct supervision to the executive editor. The multimedia editor must post content weekly and produce video packages bi-monthly. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Applicants must have knowledge of Associated Press style. Applicants must have proficiency with Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, digital camcorders, Internet concepts and technologies, Wordpress software and Apple Macintosh operating systems. The ability to capture video and use a video-editing program to produce the footage is required. The applicant must also: be proficient in developing story and characters; have experience with multimedia creation and editing; demonstrate strong grasp of social media practices, and; demonstrate familiarity with uploading multimedia content to online platforms, including Youtube, Vimeo, SoundCloud and more. Experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash is preferred. Typical Education or Training: To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be in good academic standing; or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility. This position is 20 hours/week and the salary is $10.50/hour.
