Junior Staff Counselor - Health Care Summer Institute Apply nowJob no:510106 Work type:Temp Full-Time Location:Main Campus (Gainesville, FL) Categories:Recreation/Event Department:29011002 - MD-HEALTH CARE SUMMER INST Classification Title Junior Staff Counselor Job Description This is a four week Junior Staff Counselor (JSC) position with the Health Care Summer Institute (HCSI) which begins on June 15, 2019 and ends on July 13, 2019. The responsibility of the JSC is to work in conjunction with other HCSI Junior Staff Counselors and Junior Staff Coordinators to supervise junior and senior high school students, 24 hours/days 7 days a week. The HCSI will be overseen by a Program Director and Program Coordinator. This is a rewarding experience for both participants and counselors. The day will begin very early in the morning and will continue late into the evening. Only those willing to commit to this schedule should apply. The responsibilities of the JSC are numerous and critical for the success of the HCSI. Each JSC is responsible for promoting an experience which is educational, safe and enjoyable. The position requires maturity, trustworthiness, high moral values, motivation, good organizational skills, commitment, good leadership skills, the ability to work as a team member and respect for self and others. The primary responsibilities of a Junior Staff Counselor at the Health Care Summer Institute are to provide supervision, mentorship, leadership, facilitation of activities, and administrative assistance to ensure intended experience for those students selected as participants. Supervision • Chaperone students to and from scheduled activities of the program (e.g. lectures and preceptorships). • Monitor students as they participate in evening, week-end or holiday activities (picnic at Lake Wauburg), etc. • Chaperone and monitor students for breakfast, lunch and dinner.Dinner should be no later than 7:00 p.m. • Ascertain that students uphold all Institute and University of Florida rules at all times. Mentoring • Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times. (this includes behavior, dress code, interaction with other counselors, interaction with Program Coordinator and with Program Director.) • Acquaint student participants with all University of Florida Student Services Facilities including, but not limited to Tigert Hall, Criser Hall, Counseling Center, Student Health and Sports facilities. • Acquaint students with the various colleges in the Health Science Center. • Assist students with personal concerns (e.g. hygiene, home-sickness, etc.). Leadership • In conjunction with Program Coordinator and other HCSI counselors, assist in planning educational, safe and enjoyable evening, weekend and holiday activities. • Ascertain that students are on time to all scheduled activities including meals. Make sure that students uphold professional dress code and behavior at all times. • Remember that the best way to lead is by EXAMPLE!!! Facilitator • The Junior Staff Counselor serves as a liaison between students and Program Coordinator and Program Director. • Helps to ensure safe transportation of students to and from activities and notify Program Director if assistance needed. • Know the participants’ medical/health concerns, medications being taken and notify Program Coordinator and Program Director immediately of any emergent or urgent medical concerns, including injuries, need for 911 services or need to go to the emergency department. • Maintain confidentiality as related to duties and staff communication. • Assist in conflict resolution between students. Notify Program Coordinator of such conflict. • Notify Program Coordinator of conflict between counselors that affects the smooth functioning of the program. • Notify Program Director of any conflict between Junior Staff Counselors and Program Coordinator that affects smooth functioning of the program. Administrative • Always carry pager on person. • Respond to pages from student participants, other Junior Staff Counselors, Program Coordinator, Program Director and Office for Diversity and Health Equity within five (5) minutes. • Always wear Health Science Center I.D. badge in a visible area. • Attend all staff meetings (planned or unplanned). • Work with the staff in the Office for Diversity and Health Equity to coordinate activities, meals, issuing of lab coats, etc. • Report all violation by student participants or staff to the Program Coordinator and Program Director. • All Junior Staff CounselorsMUST RESIDE IN CAMPUS HOUSING PROVIDED. (Cypress Hall) Advertised Salary Expected salary is $9.00 per hour (and overtime pay). Minimum Requirements Junior Staff Counselors must submit to a Section 435 Security Background Check Investigation and be cleared prior to being hired for this position. UF will pay for the background check. Counselors must be available to stay on campus from June 15 - July 13, 2019. This position requires living on campus with the HCSI participants. Junior Staff Counselors will get one weekday off per week. Counselors must be enrolled as at least a junior or senior in college having completed two years of courses while on campus. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be give to those candidates who are pursuing a degree in health care or a health profession. College students with a diverse background are encouraged to apply.
