The Institute for Families in Society ( IFS ) at the University of South Carolina was established in the early 1990s and is one of the oldest research units in the nation having a university-state partnership with its state Medicaid agency. With more than 20 years of uninterrupted funding from grants, contracts, and foundations, our integrated health and policy research is at the forefront of initiatives and policies shaping the future of health care and other public policy and programs by applying concepts of health and place, equity and geospatial analysis to our projects. While positions are posted as temporary, they are intended to be continuous for as long as contract and grant funding is sustained. This position will join the Data Science and Visualization team at IFS . The DataViz team is responsible for processing raw data, pulling down Census data, conducting geospatial analysis, maintaining GIS data files, creating automation routines for processes, creating GIS maps, creating and maintaining web applications, creating tables and charts, and building full reports. This position will use Geographic Information System ( GIS ) software, tools and methods to generate maps and infographic products in a fast paced, applied research environment. In addition to downloading and maintaining geographic data, this position will assess and propose new cartographic, infographic, and table/chart designs to fit project needs. This position will research, collect, store, retrieve, evaluate and manipulate map data related to health concepts. Staff will be a member of the DataViz team at IFS using the latest Esri software, Adobe products, scripting and programming languages (Python, JavaScript, SAS ) and other ancillary tools (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, SQL ). Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions) Master’s degree in public health, health services research, science, engineering, geography or related field with coursework and/or work experience with GIS software AND at least 2 years of work experience in public health/health data analysis mapping. Experience with ArcMap 10.4 or higher . Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment with deadlines. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Adobe products (Reader, Illustrator, InDesign); scripting languages (python, JavaScript); SQL databases and SQL query language; coding in Visual Basic in Excel; SAS ; Online mapping tools and creation of online mapping products; knowledge of public health and healthcare concepts and methods; working with health-related datasets (Medicaid/Medicare, hospitalizations, births, cancer, etc.); large datasets.
