Asbestos removal is also a duty of this position. This position may routinely perform a variety of skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in a variety of trades requiring at least apprentice level skills in any one of the trades practiced.  100L6070 Classification Duties: The following are representative of the duties that are performed by persons in the Crafts and Trades 2 category. More specific duties may be detailed in departmental job descriptions. Persons in this category, with requisite skills and abilities may at times be required to perform other duties and responsibilities including those mentioned in other classification descriptions and marginal responsibilities shared by any other classification as assigned by management. • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and prevent or correct hazardous conditions consistent with specifications and applicable codes. • Prepares sketches showing location of systems and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed equipment or systems are properly installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring. • Ensures that hazards are removed from buildings and grounds including construction materials, and other items as required. • Demonstrates appropriate work methods to other employees, including proper safety measures. • Performs asbestos abatement, to include packaging, transportation and proper disposal of asbestos as the primary job function. • Estimates and schedules work assignments. Job Description Duties Estimated Breakdown of Work Activities • Installation and repair of thermal systems insulation 90% • Removal, abatement and encapsulation of ACM and construction of critical barriers 8% • Mold remediation<2% • Required: Re-insulation of piping systems after Asbestos containing material is removed. **Fabricate insulation blankets used for certain pieces of equipment that needs removable insulation. **Assist creation of patterns and manufacture blankets accordingly; using the appropriate thread, Velcro and fasteners and industrial sewing machines. **Install insulation to all piping systems and/or related mechanical equipment such as tanks, valves, pumps, ducts, etc. **Analyze building plans for mechanical system location, routing and installation to determine location of other hazards. **Follow established EPA, AHERA, OSHA, State of Alaska and industry standard asbestos maintenance and abatement protocols and guidelines for the most effective and efficient asbestos management work practices to employ. • Install/administer all regulated areas and critical barriers using appropriate emission control methods to ensure there is no asbestos exposure to workers, area occupants and the environment. **Containerize, transport, and dispose of all hazardous waste following applicable federal, state and local regulations. **Perform job site clean-up and decontamination. **Identify possible materials within a building structure for the suspected presence of asbestos. **Perform treatment and abatement of building materials contaminated with various types of mold. **Follow established protocols and EPA guidance for basic identification, encapsulation, and removal of mold and associated building materials contaminated with mold as needed. **Perform critical barrier construction to prevent the spread of mold spores during maintenance activities. **Perform work near hot and/or moving mechanical equipment, in high and precarious locations, confined spaces and in adverse weather conditions. **Travel to remote sites throughout Alaska to perform work. **May at times be required to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management. **Appropriate protective measures must be taken to prevent possible injury.Essential • This is a union represented position within the Asbestos Shop under the Division of Maintenance, UAF Facilities Services. The positions primary responsibility will be to remove Asbestos containing construction materials and thermal systems insulation. In addition, under the direction of the insulator, the successful candidate will be required to re-insulate thermal systems with Fiberglass, and Flexible closed cell insulation. Ability to insulate systems with RamCoat high temperature insulation surfacing a plus. Knowledge, skills and abilities: *Knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to asbestos maintenance and abatement. *Ability to pass yearly asbestos physical and respirator fit test. *Ability to travel to remote sites throughout Alaska to perform work. *Ability to follow oral and written directions; learn operating policies and procedures; comprehend written material; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work. *Knowledge of insulating and lagging with fiberglass and Flexible closed cell insulation is preferred. Language Skills: *Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and technical procedures. *Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. *Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management. Interpersonal Skills:Ability to work independently and in a group setting including following, interpreting, and communicating instructions given by management; relating to management and other employees in a positive manner; making efforts to solve crew conflicts; and assisting in providing a productive and safe work environment. Mathematical Skills: *Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as pressures, frequency, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. *Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: *Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. *Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Preferred: *Knowledge of insulating and lagging with fiberglass and flexible closed cell insulation. *Ability to operate an industrial sewing machine and the ability to install/apply/manufacture insulating materials. *Demonstrated success with customer service skills. One (1) to three (3) years of asbestos maintenance and abatement experience on flooring, ceiling tiles, mastic, Thermal Systems Insulation (TSI) and miscellaneous materials such as caulking, transite, pipe, adhesive, etc. Experience Required: Some related experience and/or training. Education and Training: *Possess a current State of Alaska 40-Hour Asbestos Abatement Worker/Supervisor Certificate of Fitness or equivalent. *Maintaining the State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness is a condition of employment, maintenance of such license is at the employer’s expense. • Possess a valid driver's license at all times. • Willing to obtain Operation and Maintenance asbestos training and participate in a respirator program. Maintaining the State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness is a condition of employment, maintenance of such license is at the employer’s expense.
