Learn more about this agency Responsibilities • Maintain BLM buildings and grounds with supervision using skills in carpentry, painting, electrical, and masonry following verbal and written instruction. • Install patch and repair drywall. • Install and repair building electrical, plumbing, and mechanical system components. • Operate mowers, plow trucks, snowblowers, and small engine equipment for seasonal grounds care. Travel Required 25% or less - You may be expected to travel for this position. Experience includes: building and grounds maintenance within the trades of carpentry, painting, drywall, plumbing, electrical, and masonry in accordance with all codes and safety regulations. Physical Demands:Work involves considerable lifting over 50 pounds and carrying tools, supplies and equipment over 50 pounds for great distance in remote locations. Handles heavy and bulky materials such as plywood, sheetrock, tools and equipment. Must climb ladders, scaffolding and work on steep roofs with required fall protection measure in place. Work requires frequent standing, bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and working uncomfortable and hard to reach places. Work requires manual dexterity and mechanical altitude. Working Conditions: Assignments are performed inside and outside and at remote job sites where exposure to hazardous and extreme artic weather conditions, found in Alaska, are commonly encountered. Steep mountainous terrain, failing and downed trees, wet and marshy area are typical working environment. Travel in light aircraft and helicopters to remote locations is possible and primitive living conditions may be encountered. There is exposure to dirt, dust, sawdust, grease, machinery noise, flying sparks, glare of torches and heated materials and sharp objects. Incumbent is exposed to unpleasant fumes during painting, plumbing, wielding, and occasionally sewage if lines are frozen, broken, or severely backed up. There is exposure to hazardous wildlife such as bears, moose, lynx, etc. and use of bear spray and extra safety precautions are required.
