Duties Summary You will serve as a Highway Safety Specialist and report to the Regional Administrator (RA) and Deputy Regional Administrator (DRA) in Region 8. Under the direction and guidance from the RA/DRA, you will develop, promote and employ safety countermeasures, materials, and information for use by states, communities, and advocacy organizations to support traffic safety injury control programs.
Responsibilities As a Highway Safety Specialist, you will: • Under the guidance of the RA/DRA, provide technical assistance to States and partners on the use of Federal highway safety grant funds. Use electronic program and financial management systems to review and approve grantees' financial documents, and provide technical assistance to the SHSO and other State financial personnel including: audit activities, grant monitoring, notification of funds availability and expiration, calculation of matching requirements, reconciliation of program funds, financial source document verification, hands-on training of State personnel on the use of NHTSA's financial and grant application systems, year-end financial close-outs. • Provide technical assistance and advice to States, private and public sector organizations, and consumers regarding priority highway safety programs of the Agency. • Develop and manage traffic safety program activities, and provide technical assistance and training to States, communities, and advocacy groups in all facets of a comprehensive traffic safety prevention program, including the justification, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of traffic safety countermeasures. • Under guidance of the RA/DRA, perform writing and editing functions for use by agency and department management. • Conduct necessary research and draft documents related to the promotion of the NHTSA's traffic safety programs. Prepare reports, fact sheets, correspondence, brochures, announcements and speeches describing or promoting traffic safety. • Develop background material, conduct analyses, presentations and correspondence as requested for the RA's/DRA's signature. NHTSA is looking for an experienced who has excellent communication, grant administration and financial management skills. Experience in managing federal grants, conducting state program management reviews, data analysis, project and management planning, program administration and evaluation, and problem identification is desired.
