Dole Institute of Politics was established in 1997 as a result of Senator Dole's gift of his papers to the University of Kansas. The
Dole Institute makes the Senator's official and personal papers and congressional materials available to scholars and the public alike, and hosts a continuing set of lively programs that connect public policy to faculty, students, office holders, and the general public. The mission of the Dole Institute of Politics is to promote political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bi-partisan, philosophically balanced manner. By providing a forum for discussion of political and economic issues, fostering public service leadership and encouraging participation in the political process, we emphasize that politics is an honorable profession and provide opportunities for all to interact with political leaders, practitioners and authors. The Dole Institute also emphasizes that only through political and civic participation can citizens redirect the course of our nation. The Dole Institute Development Specialist is a professional fund-raising position responsible for creating, planning and managing all activities related to the Friends of the Dole Institute program, as well as assisting the Dole Institute administration and the Development Director for the Dole Institute (KU Endowment with the organization and implementation of a comprehensive annual giving program for raising private gifts for the Dole Institute. Additionally, the Development Specialist may identify and cultivate new partnerships and sponsorships with local businesses to create revenue for program support. The Development Specialist reports to the Director of the Dole Institute and works closely with and takes direction from the Development Director for the Dole Institute (KU Endowment). Terms of Appointment: The FTE ranges from 75% to 100% during the hours of M-F 8-5, some evenings and weekends. Schedule is determined upon the assigned FTE. The FTE will be determined during the interview selection and will be based on availability, experience and approach to fundraising for the Dole Institute. Job Description Duties include but are not limited to: 85% Implement and market the Friends of the Dole Institute program: Create and develop annual fundraising campaigns and materials targeting prospective and current individual and corporate annual donors by working closely with the Director and Director of Development to meet established funding goals, including: • Prospect identification, donor cultivation, gift solicitation, and stewardship opportunities for prospective and current annual donors (individual and corporate). • Create and prepare sponsorship proposal material and make presentations alone or in conjunction with Development Director for the Dole Institute (KU Endowment) or Director to prospective corporate donors. • Solicit new and renewing gifts for annual Friends membership campaign and oversee individual and corporate campaigns in coordination with Dole Institute administration and Development Director for the Dole Institute (KU Endowment). • Ensure Friends are acknowledged and thanked on a weekly basis. • Coordinate with KU Endowment Annual Giving Department and Development Director for the Dole Institute (KU Endowment) for donor information and records. • Work with Marketing and Communications staff on design, content and production to ensure consistent branding and promotion of the Friends program. • Extend dinner invitations, coordinate RSVP guest lists and make arrangements for special seating when appropriate. • Coordinate and execute the annual Friends dinner program and bi-annual Friends Reception. • Look for and create special engagement opportunities for Friends and steward individual relationships. • Conduct outreach to stimulate interest and involvement with the Friends program, including: attending events with specific Friends-related activities; event planning and logistics for Friends recruitment events and activities; working with Dole Institute Archive staff to create outreach opportunities such as museum and archive tours; and presenting the Dole Institute story at Rotaries, public service organizations, and other outside organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce. 15% Cultivation of sponsors for public program and institute events • Seek additional funding from corporations, pay to play events and other avenues as mutually agreed by Development Director and Director. • Work with relevant institute staff to ensure recognition is given to event sponsors. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree, plus minimum of one year experience in fundraising, event planning and/or marketing. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials. Previous experience which required the skill to prioritize and organize duties in an efficient manner as demonstrated by application materials. Preferred Qualifications Past activities and/or experiences with Senator Bob Dole and/or the Dole Institute. At least one year professional experience fundraising or marketing for a foundation or non-profit organization. Ability to work independently and on a team as evidenced by application materials. Knowledge of or experience in direct response and internet fundraising as evidenced by application materials.
