Duties Summary This position is located in the Offsite Storage, Dept of Collections Management Services, Office of the Curatorial Affairs in the National Museum of American History (NMAH). This unit is responsible for the documentation, preservation, security, accountability, accessibility and storage of
collections. The incumbent monitors the building structures, systems and collections for temperature, relative humidity, light and air quality, evidence of pest activity and damage/deterioration. Responsibilities • Manages and maintains diverse museum collections with a variety of conditions and handling needs, and monitors the building structures, systems, and environment in which they are stored. • Maintains object records within Collections Information System (such as Mimsy XG) to reconcile objects against their accession files, update collections information and create digital surrogates, and share object information with team members and answer public inquiries. • Coordinates and performs inventory and rehousing projects for museum collections. • Performs asbestos decontamination or oversight of decontamination work in museum collections. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of full-time experience at the GS-7 grade level that is close or similar to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. For this position specialized experience is defined as experience managing and preserving museum collections within a historical museum or cultural setting; using and maintaining collection information systems and database (such as Mimsy XG); and conducting directed research in support of historical museum’s collections, exhibitions, and other museum related projects. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
